WHAT’S IN SEASON

Anyone in North America who has purchased a fresh peach in January knows that not only did it taste quite unimpressive; it was also relatively expensive to boot!  Furthermore, the energy to fly that peach from somewhere in the world (where they actually grow peaches in January) involves burning more fossil fuels and energy to transport them to all the corners of the globe.  This practice certainly does not exemplify an environmentally responsible world society.  However, we can better our ways through raised awareness of these concerns and by making minor efforts and changes in our purchasing habits.

Be aware that eating and purchasing food that is in season allows you to support your local farmers, ranchers and economy more directly.  It also means you spend your money more wisely and responsibly.  Canned, frozen, pickled and dried locally produced foods processed during their natural peak season will usually taste better and be more economical than fresh foods that are purchased out of season.  Become more aware of when it is best to purchase certain types of food so you can take advantage of their peak of quality and drop in cost.  Finally, do what our ancestor knew to do – plan your meals, food preparations and purchases according to “What’s in Season”.
